Interferon Caused Autoimmune Problems
Back in 1996, on the recommendation of a gastroenterologist, I went on interferon (IFN) for hep C for stage 0-1. I had no symptoms.
I started having very bad labs, and all my enzymes went up instead of down. I had to quit after three months. Then, an autoimmune panel showed up AMA, ANA, and other autoimmune markers for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc. I went on a very high dose of prednisone for a year and a half and then a drug called Imuran for six months. Over a few years my enzymes normalized, but I still have autoimmune markers to this day. I’m 68 now and terrified to take Harvoni and risk more problems.
