The Waiting Game
Our next contestant on The Waiting Game has spent a lot of time listening for the phone to ring or sitting in a doctor’s office. Please welcome a Hepatitis C patient who has learned that it’s all in the lab work. Aren’t there a lot of similarities between The Dating Game and the Hepatitis C Waiting Game? Maybe we can take some tips from the popular television show that aired in the 60’s while we wait on our lab tests to come back.
The first set of lab results telling us that we have the virus is a hard one. The viral loads seem to take forever to come back. Low hemoglobin or elevated liver enzymes can mean that additional medications are needed. But the big one that we all wait for are those magic words “undetected” while on treatment.
Just like the Dating game, The Waiting Game also keeps a lot of things hidden from sight. The contestant can hear their voices, but can’t see what the 3 bachelors or bachelorettes look like. They can be very different than what is expected. The contestant always asks questions and takes notes in order to get clues about the mystery that was just out of view.
In the same way, your lab results are hidden. The medical staff can’t even make an educated guess. They wait until the results come in to decide what the next move will be for your health. It can leave you with feelings of fear or lead to stress and panic. You can avoid those feelings if you make the most of your time by getting some information while you’re waiting.
If you know that a certain test has been run, look it up on the internet and find out what the normal value ranges are. Take some time to write it down so you can remember it even better. This can go a long way in giving you a little peace of mind while you’re waiting. The information will not affect the outcome, but it can help you to remain calm while you’re waiting!
In the end, there is only 1 contestant that wins by giving the best answers. They are whisked off to a date in some exotic location while the losers get a consolation prize. The same is true with HCV lab results. There can only be one good answer and that is undetected. The Sustained Viral Response or SVR is the best possible hook up for us after finishing treatment. Anything else is a big disappointment.
We all know the feeling of blindly waiting for a lab result. Sometimes the waiting is for a few days or up to a week. One of the best things we can do is take good care of ourselves waiting. Don’t get sloppy physically or mentally. Instead get up and look good every day. Put your best foot forward. The treatment options for Hepatitis C almost guarantee for everyone to be a winner.
