Getting Not-So-Good Health News

Getting health news that you were not expecting can throw you into a tail spin. August 2010 was that kind of a time for me. I was lying there in a hospital bed when my liver doctor came in and gave me the news that my liver had advanced from stage 1 to stage 4 and was now cirrhotic. I laid there in shock and my breathing seemed to stop. My immediate thought was, “Oh my gosh, my kids”. I had just lost my mom to this disease less than 4 years prior. I saw her body deteriorate down to nothing, saw her physical and emotional being wither away slowly. How can this be? At that time, there was no true cure for hep C, only a 50/50 chance on harsh, old treatments.

I was stuck

There are songs out there about what you would do if you got the news you were dying… they say that you go out and live like you were dying. Well, that is not what I did or felt like doing. My visions of my future stopped. I no longer had dreams at night. I no longer fantasized about vacation spots or thought about anything other than death. It was horrible, and I was stuck.

Everyone reacts differently to bad news

I know that many people who get devastating news tend to stop in their tracks. I am sure that some people go out and “live like they are dying” and do all the things they dreamt of doing, but the reality for me was so far from that.

I wish I could say that if you get this kind of news you will be strong, confident, and ready to take on the battle.. However, the reality of the situation is different for everyone. I can only share from my personal experience and my fight. It also depends on if you have been through similar experiences with someone close to you.

Take it one step at a time

Take it day by day. Don’t fret over tomorrow for it is not here yet. Don’t waste time worrying about things that are not here. Save that valued energy for yourself and those closest to you. Most importantly, remove negative surroundings. Find sayings/quotes that inspire you and offer comfort.

If you are the type of person who wants to go out and fulfill your bucketlist dreams, go for it. Keeping in mind… Hep C can be cured. It is not a death sentence, and neither is cirrhosis. I am living proof.
