Preparing for a Doctor’s Visit

Things to remember when going into your doctor for a check-up: I found that if I wrote my questions down throughout the time frame between appointments, it was much easier for me know what I had concerns about and wanted to discuss. Here are some examples of things you might want to keep track of, as you will be asked during your visit about these.

What to ask your doctor

  • List any issues you have been experiencing, such as muscle/joint pain, headaches, weakness, cloudy feelings, dehydration, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, etc.
  • Ask about upcoming testing
  • Get your latest blood work and other test results
  • Ask about any treatment questions you have
  • Get clarification on diet (if you have questions about what you should or should not be eating)
  • Discuss any depression or anxiety you are having
  • Concerns about your liver health: Are you stressed about something and need reassurance from your doctor on the direction of your treatment?

Tips for medical appointments

Remember to bring someone with you during these visits to help you remember what was shared with you and to also help you follow proper protocol on treatment dosages, etc.

Going to the doctor can be filled with high anxiety and nervousness. However, being prepared to ask questions and discuss concerns will help you maintain a good sense of traceability in your care.

Most doctor visits, as I learned, are not close together unless you are on treatment. I have had time where I waited up to 4-6 months to be seen by my doctor- not because my case was not important, but because my case was not urgent. Keep in mind that doctors do reserve those time slots close together for their most serious patients in end stage liver disease and those on treatment. Just because your visit is schedule out several months does not reflect you being ignored or that you are not important. If your situation was more critical or emergent, you would be getting more frequent visits.

Being prepared will help you feel more confident in your liver health and help you prepare for upcoming treatment and/or follow-up checkups after reaching SVR.
